Application for change of status of residence and the application form preparation system

Changing Status of Residence to “Designated Activities“ section

When international students will remain in Japan after graduation for any of following reasons, they must change their status of residence to “Designated Activities.”

  • To seek employment in Japan (categorized as a “student seeking employment”).
  • When a person holding “Student” or “Designated Activities” status of residence of receives a tentative offer of employment, and wishes to remain in Japan until the employment commences.
  • When the student has been admitted to a postgraduate course in Japan and wishes to remain in Japan until their enrollment.

Eligibility
  • Applicants must hold “Student” status of residence
    *Except for Japanese language students, auditing students, non-degree students, and research students.
  • Those holding the status of residence of “Student” or “Designated Activity in order to seek employment”

  • Must have been accepted for admission to a postgraduate course in Japan
Application documents
  • Application Forms (For those who wish to stay for job hunting after graduating from university, etc.)
  • One ID photo(4 x 3 cm, taken within six months prior to the date of application)
  • Passport
  • Residence card
  • Documents certifying your financial ability during your period of stay in Japan, such as certificate of bank balance, certificate of scholarship award, etc.
  • Processing fee of \4,000, to be paid by revenue stamp (shunyu inshi)
    *Revenue stamps are available at post offices and convenience stores.
Additional documents may be required by the immigration bureau.
Additional documents required for each
  • Documents certifying your financial ability during your period of stay in Japan, such as certificate of bank balance, certificate of scholarship award, etc.
  • Diploma or a graduation certificate
  • Recommendation letters must be submitted in the approved form
  • Documents showing the job-seeking activities that you have already begun prior to graduation
    e.g. a notice of screening results (letter or e-mail) sent by a company to which you applied, brochures for company information sessions, etc.
  • A Letter of Job Offer issued by an employer.
  • The supporting documents to be submitted on the application to change the status of residence depending on the activity after being employed.
  • Promissory Letter that the Immigration Bureau appointed
  • The supporting documents proving the training before starting a job
    (In case the training before staring a job is required by an employer.)

In case the status of residence for provider was changed to "Designated Activity" provider's spouse and children must change their status of residence from "Dependent" to "Designnated Activity".
